Music is magic! Music is transformative! Music makes the mood!
These are all beliefs of Mayen Akpan: avid classical musician, recitalist, composer and experienced music instructor.
Mayen began her piano studies on accident. During her time on the swim team (2001), her friends influenced her musical palette with alternative rock music. She was inspired to learn how to play the drums, but was instead convinced to temporarily take piano lessons, as a precursor. Since that ‘accident’, Mayen has never looked back at her initial drumming desires, but has had her life so impressionably shaped by piano and classical music that she has decided to mold a career centered around it.
Mayen has enjoyed teaching piano since 2007 (ages 4 to adult). She is extremely patient, accommodating, and loves helping others to discover the joys of musical arts.
Mayen also engages in activity with other musical instruments: Clarinet (since 2002), and Voice (since 2010). Mayen has an electrifying zeal for opera, piano, and orchestral music. She also has a flair for languages; she is able to read, write, and speak Mandarin-Chinese and German.
While studying engineering in college, Mayen sustained her passion for music by serving as the principal clarinetist in the Sinfonietta Student Orchestra (2009-2013). She continued piano lessons, studying under doctoral piano students from 2008 to 2013, and recently served as the vice president of the newly-formed Penn State Liszt Society. Mayen was also involved as a principal keyboardist for the 2011 Penn State theater production: My Favorite Year. She also thoroughly delighted being part of the Fall 2013 Penn State Percussion II Ensemble, where she played the marimba and bells, for the first time!
All of Mayen’s many musical experiences have developed her into a promising composer. She composes for jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, piano, orchestra, voice (classical, pop, RnB, blues, rock, folk, country), and marimba. She is currently orchestrating her first, originally-written piano concerto.
Mayen utilizes her past personal experiences to encourage everyone to pursue their dreams, and embrace their individuality, whole-heartedly and without apology.
