Hi Janet,

I use Logic X and various sample libraries to compliment Logic's own sounds.

Vienna Instruments Special Edition Vol.1, Cinematic Strings 2.1, Project Sam Orchestral Essentials and Kontakt 5 are the basic entry level ones I use but I intend to add more very soon. Possibly Cinebrass Pro or some libraries by Albion. The better (usually meaning more expensive) the sound sources, the better the result but it is possible to get good results with less expensive sounds if one spends a lot of time to get the best out of them.

I think it is important for a composer/orchestrator to know his/her way around a keyboard instrument because of the versatility and flexibility it offers. Especially in the area of harmony and in conjunction with computers.

I didn't have any serious piano lessons until I was about 14 but I had played the recorder in primary school (UK age 6-11) and my mother was a singer and a song-writer. I think as soon as I started playing properly, I had the urge to make up stuff of my own!

Hope that's of some use to you.

Mike

Hi Janet,
Please ask me anything and I'll be pleased to help. I'm travelling at the moment but hopefully I'll have internet access most of the time.
All the best,
Michael
