"Chill" music

While I compose in a largely classical style, I think there are wonderful things happening in music outside of that world. One movement I have been keeping my eyes on is “Chill,” which is characterized by music which is an almost melody-less style of music, which tends to be heavily electronic, beat-heavy, and tends to rely on psychedelic sounds in the background to keep up the listener’s interest. Here’s a Chill song from one of the best groups of the genre, “Lemon Jelly” -…See More

"Hi Harmonia, Thanks for your appreciation, glad you enjoyed! The Weather Channel is like modern day Muzak, only better. They always seem to have these catchy, piano-based tunes which are clearly intended to be just background to the weather report,…"

Black History Month

African Americans are integral to American music and have created some of the most wonderful and popular music in this country. Eubie Blake was a contemporary of “King of Ragtime” Scott Joplin’s who outlived all of his peers (he died in 1983, 60 years after Joplin). He had massive hands which could stretch a “twelfth” on the piano, meaning he could simultaneously play notes that were an octave-and-a-half apart (most pianists can only reach an octave, or about 2/3 of what Eubie could reach). He…See More

Harmonization on a theme by Fredrick Zinos

Hello all,I am not sure if I am posting this in the right category, if not, perhaps an admin can move this to where it needs to be. My friend Fredrick Zinos, wrote a melody in what I would call a traditional style, and then I wrote harmony for it in what I would call a non-traditional style. I think it overall came out pretty good, what do you think?https://youtu.be/AdD5uyx1mUcSee More

"Sure, I can share a couple of thoughts about composing this type of music: 1) The march has to be incredibly slow, slower than one normally thinks of a march being, because the bride walks very slowly up to the marriage spot. Too fast, and the pace…"

Wedding March

I am particularly fond of wedding music and have composed for several friends and family members. It seems to me there is a particular challenge in writing this type of music. You have to write a slow march for the processional, and then a companion recessional which is joyous and which ties in thematically to the processional. Here is the march I wrote for a friend of mine, Rick, who was married over 20 years ago and is still together with his beloved. If there is interest, I will post the…See More

* 20th Century Piece

Posted on October 5, 2014 at 4:00pm 2 Comments

Hello all, thought I would share this with you for no other reason than I find it wonderful. Generally speaking I am not a huge fan of most twentieth century composing, the atonal stuff particularly I don't enjoy. A few years ago, I got a book of piano compositions which included this piece by a composer I had never heard of before, Walter Piston. It's full of all sorts of strange melodies and harmonies, and has a power to it that I find as compelling as anything I've heard. In addition to…

Greetings Gav -

This site is for collaboration and lifelong learning for classical and jazz musicians.  We are not a forum per se, but any member can start a forum thread or write a blog and allow other members to comment.

You're welcome to start a forum thread, post a piece there and ask for comments.  The challenge is that not everyone will see it, since they login directly to whatever project they are currently involved in.

Please do start a forum thread and hopefully people will come and listen.
